SREMSKA MITROVICA

The city area of Sremska Mitrovica was repeatedly bombed by NATO.

Sremska Mitrovica stretches on the remains of the antique Sirmium which in the period from the 1st to the 6th century was the administrative center of the Roman province of Pannonia Secunda, periodically the Imperial residence and the bishops see in the early Christian period. The city was raised to the rank of colony during the rule of the emperors of the Flavian dynasty, and in the period between the 3rd and the 4th century it was the center of the governors of the province and the seat of the Roman prefecture of Illyricum. Archaeological research shows that Sirmium was a large city with the Emperor's Palace, the hippodrome, thermae (baths), market and craft centers and the necropolis, surrounded by ramparts and moats.
In the Early Byzantine period, the city became the center of the cult of St. Demeterios, the protector of the city of Salonica.
