The Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments of Serbia is the Public Institution founded in 1947 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Its aim is to identify, study, conduct research and protect cultural monuments in Serbia and Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija and Autonomous Province of Vojvodina.

The activities of the Institute include:

  • overall protection of immovable and movable cultural property;
  • improvement of methods and techniques of preservation of cultural property;
  • advanced and specialized training of personnel;
  • maintenance of central registers of immovable cultural property;
  • responsibility for immovable and movable cultural property of special importance to the history and culture of Serbia situated within the territory of other countries;
  • laboratory research of ancient masonry/painting techniques and methods;
  • application of international conventions on the protection of cultural property in peace time and in the event of armed conflict;
  • publication of studies, documentation and other relevant material concerning the research and preservation of cultural property, mainly in the Institute's annual Saopstenja (Communications), but in other editions as well;
  • maintenance of central library with general and specific issues on art history and preservation of cultural property.

The professional and support staff of the Institute numbers 65 members, including:

  • archaeologists
  • architects
  • art historians
  • chemists/technologists
  • ethnologists
  • historians
  • painters
  • photographers
